The benefits of having a bluetooth keyboard

October 20th, 2011

Amongst all the peripherals available for a desktop PC, a Bluetooth wireless keyboard is one device that is becoming increasingly popular. For those with notebook systems these keyboards are especially convenient for there portability as well convenience and offer the user another alternative from the sometimes small keyboard layout available on most mini notebook systems.
Why you need a Bluetooth keyboard
One of the greatest advantages of having a Bluetooth keyboard is that you no longer have to have wires draping all round your desktop or notebook system. As Bluetooth is a wireless technology you also are not restricted in a set location, instead you have the freedom to move further away from the display which is great for those that use large displays as part of there graphical user interface.
Now you maybe thinking, great no wires! But a Bluetooth peripheral doesn’t really offer that many benefits to warrant a purchase over a standard convention wired keyboard. Well, the fact of the matter is that there are some people that can’t stand the site and inconvenience of regularly untying knots and cable mess as well as being restricted in a set position. For those that want a simple solution to fix these common inconveniences then a Bluetooth keyboard is a worthwhile purchase. Remember, tidy workspace, clear mind, right!?
Bluetooth technology is here to stay!
Whether you know it or not, wireless mediums are the future. Already on the market today you will find many various other types of Bluetooth compatible devices for your computer such as printers, mice, USB hubs and more. Mostly all new desktop and laptop systems come incorporated with wireless Bluetooth technology providing you a plethora of options when it comes to connecting compatible peripheral devices. Along with a Bluetooth keyboard you could also have an accompanying mouse as well as printing device and for those that like taking photos you can also transfer videos and pictures straight from your handheld devices to your computer. Think about the possibilities! The flexibility you get in return for investing a little more cash on wireless devices will reward you greatly, don’t be left behind!
What will you need to connect a Bluetooth keyboard or any other device for that matter?
If you are fortunate enough to have a system that has the technology integrated then all you need to do is purchase a keyboard and simply setup a connection between your computer and device. Windows operating systems and Linux all come with the necessary applications to provide you with a 1 click connection process making it easy and fast to have your Bluetooth keyboard up and running. For those with no Bluetooth technology in there system you have a few alternatives to benefit from this great technology. If you plan on connecting other compatible devices such as wireless printers and mice then a Bluetooth dongle would be worth considering. These dongles connect via a free USB port and allow you to connect your devices easily and conveniently. If you are just looking to connect a wireless keyboard or mouse, or perhaps both then you will find that there are bundled sets that include a receiver so you can use your keyboard or mouse, although remember other Bluetooth devices will not be able to make a connection. These receivers are not replacements for full on dongles!
That just about covers the basics of why you should consider making your setup wireless, and what better way to start the process by getting yourself your very own Bluetooth keyboard! What are you waiting for!

Handsfree Bluetooth Cell Phone Tips

October 7th, 2011

I’ll never wear that @$#x! thing on my ear. . . . . How many times do you think I have heard that from customers who walk up to me? Question #1: I am going to ask the question this time. Why is it that it always seems the people who are the most adamant about, “I aint gonna wear that $@#x! thing in my ear”, referring to a hands free bluetooth headset, are the very same STUPID moron drivers who won’t get off their phones on the road?? I have read some good postings on the web about completely idiotic behavior due to distracted driving that perhaps could have been avoided or at least curtailed by responsible cell phone use. Wake up people. Use your head(set). I have been around the wireless phone business for a long time and I have never seen such absolute ignorance when it comes to a viable solution for hands free phone use: e. g, the bluetooth headset. I hate to say it, but it is a segment of the population that I happen to belong to that is most guilty of the crime also. People over 45. Put your pride aside and get with the program. Someone came up with a brilliant idea (and I don’t mean that sarcastically) for use with a cell phone and you refuse to use it. I can hear the excuses now. “I can’t wear that thing, it hurts my ear”. “That thing looks stupid on my ear”. I answer, what is the alternative? Maiming or permanently disabling someone who is driving responsibly and you having to live with the consequences of stupid behavior. That’s a no-brainer. . . . . . Forgive me, I rant Tip #1 (then is. . . . ): Wear the thing. Tip #2: Don’t get frustrated with the goofy thing even if you do think you look like some character from Star Trek. There are literally thousands of hands free bluetooth options on the market today. Find what works for you: an in-ear headset design for your cell phone use, or the over-the-ear design, complete with a boom, if you like. If you care to listen to music with a stereo bluetooth headset, there a large variety to pick from out there on the market now. I have actually found dealers who incorporate phone bluetooth technology into hearing aids. That was an idea that was a long time coming. Finally. Let technology work for you. Tip #3: When pairing the bluetooth headset with your bluetooth compatible phone, use the bluetooth passkey. (Shhh, it’s a secret bluetooth passkey: Four zero’s, 0000). Don’t tell anyone now. You’ll be amazed to find out how many times I have helped people find that secret code in pairing their bluetooth headset. Don’t feel bad, you’re not the only one. Tip #4: Make sure that your cell phone is handsfree bluetooth compatible. Not yet a given. Usually, if you search under your menu on your phone and look under “connectivity” for a bluetooth option then it is, but not all of the older cell phones had bluetooth technology built in yet. Tip #5: This is the least known of all aspects of bluetooth handsfree headset technology. Make sure that you are wearing your hands free bluetooth on the same side of your body as your bluetooth compatible cell phone. Some cell phone headsets can not “see” through your body, so keep it line-of-sight. Tip #6: Be wary of pairing a bluetooth compatible cell phone to a vehicles’ bluetooth voice-dialer. Not every phone is compatible with the profiles supported by the car manufacturer. Get with your automobile dealer to see specifically which wireless phone manufacturers are recommended by the car dealer. Just because a wireless phone is bluetooth compatible and the car is bluetooth compatible, doesn’t mean that the two devices will “see” each other. It’s much more complex than that. There are about 8-10 different profiles that bluetooth technology deals with, and hands free bluetooth pairing with a vehicles’ dialer is only one of them. Not all devices support all of the 8-10 profiles. Remember this rule of thumb however when you are purchasing equipment with bluetooth compatibility: you get what you pay for. Look for my next blog. . . Maybe we’ll get a psychologist to tell us the reason why people do stupid things. . . . like text messaging on their cell phone when they are driving. . . . that’ll be a good one, eh?? TTFN. Tee, hee, hee. :-) Creation of this blog. . . . . . This blog was designed to be a Q & A for the Costco member who can’t seem to get around to ask the wireless phone guy or gal about the issue they are having and finding solutions. I hope you will find it helpful and please feel free to post your comments if you like. I used to joke around with my coworkers in Costco that someday we would run a class on Saturday mornings on the porch like you would see at the Home Depot on how to lay tile in your bathroom, or how to (. . . . insert project here) This is that class, and you don’t have to get up early on a Saturday and go to the Home Depot. We will delve into issues like cell phone radiation protection (the myth-the legend), electromagnetic protection, roaming and why did it take me a week to get that text, possibly a review or two, guest columnists and wireless industry return policies. If you are a Sam’s Club member and you go into a Sam’s Club or if you’re a Costco member and you shop for wireless phones at your local Costco Warehouse, make sure to ask about the return policy for their wireless phones and bluetooth products. Their return policies have changed recently, so don’t be blind-sided. I will also give some straight talk regarding why wireless companies don’t give you squat when you have been a loyal customer of theirs for 700 years. (Is that possible??). We will run the gamut as far as topics, and finding solutions. Wireless phones and the cell phone industry has become the industry we love to hate, but look where it has brought us.

Bluetooth Enable a Perfect Wireless World

August 24th, 2011

What is Bluetooth?Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, printers, GPS receivers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency. The Bluetooth specifications are developed and licensed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

Bluetooth Specification

The Bluetooth specification was developed in 1994 by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson, who were working for Ericsson Mobile Platforms in Lund, Sweden. The specification is based on frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology.

The specifications were formalized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), organised by Mohd Syarifuddin. The SIG was formally announced on May 20, 1998. Today it has a membership over 7000 companies worldwide. It was established by Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba, and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies.

Before Investing In A Bluetooth Stereo Headset

August 10th, 2011

Riding the wave of the newest, hot technological item of the early 21st century doesn’t stop with the Bluetooth stereo headset. Now, Bluetooth capabilities offer more services and gadgets than ever before, including a Bluetooth stereo headset. When looking for a stereo headset, many major brands offer nice selections, but none so nice as those offered by Motorola. Motorola is taking the lead when it comes to designing attractive and spiffy gadgets to complement Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Coming soon from Motorola is a behind the head, sleek, Bluetooth stereo headset that will allow users to wirelessly control music and telephone calls using a system of touch controls on the side of the headband. Another creation that will soon be released for public consumption is the SoundPilot Headphones. This Bluetooth stereo headset and controller will allow users to use their own headphones to both accept calls and listen to music no matter where it’s stored; on the computer, phone or other Bluetooth compatible device. On the market now is a Bluetooth stereo headset called the Bluetooth DJ S805 headphones. These headphones look more like traditional, padded, wireless headphones that incorporate noise reduction and a wind resistant microphone to allow easy conversations no matter where you are or what you were listening to before you were interrupted. Also available now is the HT820 Bluetooth stereo headset, also designed to fit behind the head and over the ear. Both telephone and music capabilities are blended with this option as well, and music automatically stops when the headset receives an incoming call. After the conversation is completed, music will automatically resume. It doesn’t get much better than that. Bluetooth stereo headset adapters are readily available and can easily slide into any available USB port on laptops or computers, enabling users to stream their favorite music directly from your home stereo or computer speakers. The most popular adaptor is the Motorola Stereo PC Adaptor PC850. Compatible with any Bluetooth stereo headset, this gadget is a must have for Bluetooth fans. The also popular Bluetooth Stereo PC adaptor D200 is a handy choice for those who want to turn their computer into a wireless music system. Both PCs and Macs accept this adaptor to wirelessly stream music from PC to headset with little fuss. And, check this out. Motorola has the leading edge on wearable Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth stereo headset capabilities just took a leap into the future with ROKR Bluetooth stereo headset eyewear, designed especially for today’s always-on-the-go consumers. Of course, Bluetooth stereo headset accessories are also available for vehicles and office use as well. Experts in consumer electronics have predicted that within another five years, new cars will have built-in Bluetooth technology incorporated into their designs. The Bluetooth stereo headset has and will continue to be on the cutting edge of wireless connectivity, but be prepared to see different designs and models explode into the consumer market as technology continues to advance full speed ahead. One thing is certain; since the Bluetooth stereo headset is becoming so commonplace, where’s yours?

Working From Home with A Wireless Bluetooth

July 25th, 2011

Bluetooth is a wireless communication protocol that provides a method of wirelessly exchanging data between bluetooth enabled devices. Unlike Wi-Fi which requires more power to operate and a separate configuration for each device, Bluetooth requires low power consumption, is relatively simple to use, and is designed for use in a much smaller area. A network of devices formed around Bluetooth is known as a PAN, or Personal Area Network. While the technology has been around for over ten years and its use has steadily grown, still relatively few take full advantage of the many capabilities it presents. One excellent use of Bluetooth technology for the consumer is in the home office. The conversion of a typical home office set up to wireless technology is fairly simple and straightforward. It is not required to have any programming skills or advanced computer skills in order to make it work. In converting your home office to Bluetooth wireless, the first order of business is acquiring an adapter for your computer. This is a small device which plugs into the USB port of your computer and will allow your computer to communicate with Bluetooth components. Many of these adapters (or dongles) are similar in size to the popular USB flash drives. The adapter becomes the “master” and is capable of communicating with up to seven Bluetooth enabled devices. They are manufactured by many well known companies in the wireless field, such as D-link and Linksys, and are readily available. Moving on, you may then want to consider a wireless mouse and keyboard. These devices must be purchased with Bluetooth technology pre-installed (there are no converters available for these components). There are a considerable number on the market and most work basically the same. Your choice should be one of personal preference and as these are separate devices it is not necessary to replace both. Several of the more popular models are made by Logitech and Microsoft. Next step is the printer. While there are several newer printers on the market that are bluetooth enabled, many opt for a printer adapter which will do the same job. If you are in the market for a new printer, it makes sense to buy one that is already Bluetooth capable. If not, adapters are readily available for most printers. They are similar to the computer adapter in that they plug into the printers USB port. There are also several models available which will utilize the parallel port for older printers. Congratulations – you have just set up your Personal Area Network. However, no more hassling with wires and cables is just the beginning. And this is where the real beauty and functionality of Bluetooth lies. You now have a PAN that will work well with any Bluetooth enabled device. Upload and download data from your PDA without wires. Wirelessly upload and print photos from a Bluetooth enabled digital camera. Print documents from your laptop with no cables. If you enjoy music while you work, Bluetooth enabled stereo headphones are available. It is great technology with endless possibilities for both productivity and enjoyment.
